Vintage Appliances

My obsession with old household articles aside, this was simply the result of a nostalgic trip through my mother’s kitchen cupboard, some strong coffee and too much time on my hands.

I think what fascinates me about such things are the volumes of culture inherent in the simple, utilitarian design and construction. These articles were built when industrial designers like Lurelle Van Arsdale Guild, who dreamt up the iconic Electrolux Model XXX (which more resembled a streamlined passenger locomotive than a vacuum cleaner) were an integral part of the manufacturing process.

These items have an object presence and a quality of construction that quite sets them apart from our current-day equivalents. It is this quality that I strive for in my own work, every day.
