As restrooms are hard to come by in a place like the La Cloche Mountains, disposing of human waste must be done with great care and respect. Most of what I know and the techniques I employ can be found in the most excellent book, How To Shit In The Woods, by Kathleen Meyer.

Steve and Roger hiking the South Ridge of the La Cloche mountains. We packed up our slightly drier gear quickly and began the trek back along the South Ridge in a south-westerly direction toward The Crack. The views of the many lakes, islands and rocky hilltops were no less impressive seeing them the second time. Walking the same trail in the opposite direction can sometimes provide a very different perspective.

As we carefully descended from the ridge down through The Crack, we encountered several day-hikers and a couple of people headed out for a multi-day excursion on the La Cloche Silhouette. We thought about those poor souls up on the hilltops a couple of hours later as a heavy rainstorm rolled in off Georgian Bay and gave us a good soaking. To help lift our spirits, I dug into my first-aid kit and offered everyone some caffeine tablets for a little boost. The uppers certainly did their job as we bounded home toward George Lake.
