The French River

Despite Janet’s new appreciation for my lack of moving water canoeing skills (or judgement), we were both very impressed to find that we didn’t lose a single item from our boat. My neurotic obsession with securing everything to the canoe had finally paid off.

Mercifully, cloud cover began to move in as we headed west toward Pine Cove where we began our trip. It was surprising how cool we began to feel when the sun disappeared and we paddled once again into the prevailing westerlies. We were all feeling a bit tired now and were eager to finish up.

We found navigation to be a challenge and we did not hesitate to ask a local cottager some directions despite our confidence in our general direction of travel. It always astounds me how it seems that you have traveled further then is apparent by consulting a map. This phenomenon helps me to maintain a cautious optimism when gauging distances on any backcountry excursion.

Once again, we found our host, Alec Strachan to be most helpful as we rolled into Pine Cove just as he was about to sit down to dinner. Once all the gear (and the damage we had inflicted upon it) had been accounted for, we loaded our damp gear and weary bodies into our cars and began our long trip home.

I wish to thank The Lodge at Pine Cove outfitters for being gracious hosts and would highly recommend a stay at their well-appointed housekeeping cottages in conjunction with a trip on the French River. Their award-winning chef offers an exquisite menu, a great wine list and the facility features a full-service spa.

Hopefully, not too many years will pass me by until the day I return to explore the vast French River area. It is a crown jewel in the rugged Canadian Shield region and is not to be missed.

Reading about it I felt like I was with you (even started itching when you got swarmed). Great description of what sounds like an amazing Ontario destination. Thanks!

if I go there in Scott’s canoe and with his optimism and sense of transience… I will go. For the meantime, I can surf here without insects.
