Maple Mountain 2.0

The next day we wound our way deeper into the vast backcountry via Hobart Lake and then northwest and around south into Tupper Lake. With a bit of scanning, we found the trail head for the hike up to the summit of Maple Mountain, the third highest point in Ontario.

The approach to the summit was a rugged hike with a gradually steepening climb up for about an hour until we emerged above the treeline. We were presented with a glorious view of the fall colours, countless sapphire lakes and granite ridges that are typical of the area.

Approaching the summit of Maple MountainWe hiked along a massive granite ridge that dropped off sharply to the east before arriving at the peak, where we found an old ranger tower. We climbed the tower that was over 50m tall up an old steel ladder with a safety cage (Elmer the Safety Elephant would not have approved of this). Although the weather was good, the altitude provided us with a strong, buffeting wind that sometimes shook the old tower. The view from the top can only be seen in person to be appreciated. It was most definitely worth the effort.
